Audi's ultimate A4, the RS4, comes with a new 4.2-litre V8 FSI engine -
technology that has been honed in the harsh arena of endurance racing.
The RS models have long had a cult following, and this one should be no
different.
EVO Magazine The RS4's crowning glory is undoubtedly its
S4-derived direct petrol injection 4.2-litre V8. It's hugely powerful,
as you'd expect of an RS-model Audi, but there has been a clear shift in
philosophy.
Car and Driver
...you don’t need huge top speed to enjoy the RS 4’s 420-hp
direct-injection V-8. Just about anywhere will do. The engine pulls
smoothly from idle, with abundant thrust available from 2300 rpm. In
fact, 90 percent of the car’s peak torque is available between 2250 and
7600 rpm.
The Times
You don’t notice this, however, on the RS4 because it has massively
flared wheelarches shrouding huge low-profile tyres. You know, just from
looking at it, that it’s going to be very, very fast. And it is.

Hit the RS4's brushed alloy starter button and you'd better know what
you're letting yourself in for. Via a selection of conductors, chips and
relays, you could be, as Maximus says in the opening sequence of
Gladiator, about to "unleash hell."
